A sportsbook’s official betting lines are those that are deemed to be fair by the sport’s governing body. Official betting is available on all major markets, including totals, over/unders, moneylines and prop bets.

The governing bodies of the major North American sports leagues have signed partnerships with gaming companies to provide official betting data. This allows the companies to use the league’s branding and logos in their betting products, and it also gives them access to official team rosters, game statistics and other relevant information. The NHL, NBA and MLB have also established player ambassador roles with gambling companies, allowing the players to make promotional appearances on behalf of those brands. Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid, for example, has signed an ambassador deal with BetGM and appeared in a promotional video with that company alongside hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

Depending on the sport, a player’s responsibilities could include being banned from placing wagers on games that don’t involve their teams. For instance, a baseball player who works for a national team cannot place bets on multisport competitions, while a soccer player working in the management or coaching of a professional club cannot bet on matches within the WBSC system.

Anyone involved with a club at lower levels of the men’s or women’s league systems, as well as match officials, are also banned from betting on games that they have any involvement in. However, this only applies to matches in which the person is directly involved or can influence.
