OPINION: The betting scene is changing dramatically after the Supreme Court ruled that states have the right to regulate sports gambling as they see fit. Nevada was the first state to legalize USA sports betting, but many others have followed suit. It’s important to understand the rules and regulations of each state before placing a bet.

Generally, it is against the rules for anyone involved in a WBSC competition to bet on any event where that individual is competing. This includes players, team officials (including coaches and managers), tournament officials, and anyone in an ownership or executive role within the entity that organizes or promotes a WBSC-sanctioned event. The rule is designed to prevent people from betting on events that they might have a duty or responsibility to monitor.

It’s also against the rules for anyone involved in a sport to take bribes in exchange for fixing a game or an event in a game. One of the most famous examples of this happened in 1919, when Joseph Sullivan paid eight members of the Chicago White Sox to fix the World Series. All of the players were permanently banned from professional baseball for their part in this scandal.

Often, betting on a game is done by making a bet on the outcome of a particular contest, known as a moneyline bet. Alternatively, bettors can place a wager on the number of points scored in a game, which is called an over/under bet. The over/under bet is calculated by adding the total number of points scored by both teams to the final score of the game.
