With legal sports betting now in place across the United States, professional leagues have gained visibility into wagering activity that they didn’t previously have. As a result, they’ve been able to forge new relationships with bookmakers and expand their efforts in the realm of responsible gaming.

Official betting is a form of wagering where the bettor puts money behind an outcome and gets paid if that outcome happens. Money line bets, over/unders and if bets are types of official bets. The odds for a particular event are constantly changing, and it’s important to monitor injury reports before making an official bet.

NBA players who violate rules against gambling can be suspended for up to a year. They can be punished if they bet on games while at their team or league facilities or if they provide inside information to someone who would bet on an NBA game. The NBA’s policy also prohibits betting on its summer league, G-League or Basketball Africa League teams.

Alabama doesn’t have any commercial casinos, so it was impossible to implement legal sports betting there. It did put the issue up for consideration in 2021, but ultimately opted to let its tribal casinos offer sportsbooks. Sports betting launched in Kansas on Sept. 1 of 2022, and the state has six online operators. All of the sportsbooks in the state offer bets on collegiate events, including player props. BetRivers, FanDuel and DraftKings all operate sportsbooks in the state.
