The goal of this paper is to analyse student designers’ composing processes for interactive digital narratives (IDN). IDN is a new genre of interactive art, which differs from the traditional narrating models in its emphasis on choice and multiple trajectories for player engagement. These qualities enable the user to develop a literacy for complexity, by allowing them to make plans, execute them and see their resulting consequences. They also facilitate replay, enabling the interactor to revisit their decisions or explore other perspectives. This is a crucial step in achieving greater understanding of complex phenomenon. This paper presents a secondary analysis of IDN designed by novice students and their reflections generated during a 2.5-h online workshop. The findings suggest that IDN is a genre which can challenge students’ existing narrating skills and raise their awareness of the interactivity of complex phenomena.
