The game of official poker involves wagering money against other players and can be played in cash or for chips that represent currency. Games that feature betting with actual money are referred to as cash games or ring games. In tournaments, players pay an entry fee to play. In the most popular form of poker, Texas hold ’em, two cards, known as hole cards, are dealt to each player. Five community cards are then dealt in stages, which include a series of three cards (“the flop”) and then an additional single card (known as “the turn” or “fourth street”). Players make bets using their hole cards and the community cards to attempt to form a winning poker hand.
In a showdown, the winning player is the first to reveal their cards. In some cases, a tied hand is awarded a portion of the pot and a showdown does not take place. Calling in the final betting round when you know that you do not have the best hand but suspect your opponent may be bluffing is called a hero call or a float.
